Ferencvaros and Vasas will battle for the trophy in the Hungarian Cup final tomorrow evening on Margaret Island in Budapest.
Ferencvaros reached the final for the fifth year in a row, having won the title in the previous four editions. Vasas, on the other hand, returned to the final after 14 years ago and a silver medal in 2009. It’s been 17 years since Vasas last won the national cup.
Today, Ferencvaros beat Honved 9:6, and Vasas narrowly defeated OSC Budapest 14:13 in the semifinals.
Vasas and OSC met in the first match. It was a game with a lot of turns. One team had a 2-goal lead only once (OSC had an 8:6 advantage in the middle of the third period). Before the final eight minutes, the teams were tied at 10:10, and a fierce battle continued. OSC went ahead just once in the fourth quarter – 11:10. Vasas took control then and earned a 12:11 advantage. OSC leveled at 12:12. Vasas replied with two goals. Sava Randjelovic made it 14:12 with 106 seconds left on the clock. Baksa Benedek halved the deficit immediately in the following possession, but it was the last goal in the game.
Ferencvaros and Honved were in a neck-and-neck race for two quarters and a half. In the 21st minute, only one goal separated the rivals – Ferencvaros led 6:5. Ferencvaros earned a solid advantage late into the third quarter when Dusan Mandic scored two quick goals and widened the gap to three – 8:5. In the remaining time, both sides scored a goal each.
