The warming-up for the best teams at the Men’s U16 Championships in Volos is over. The competition in the groups of the Preliminary Stage ended today.
From tomorrow, the best 16 teams will continue hunting medals in the knockout rounds (Platinium and Gold). The remaining nine sides will play in a consolation Silver Round.
Today, the most exciting match of the day was an encounter between Egypt and Ukraine. The game ended in a 7:7 draw. That result was enough for Egypt to secure 2nd place in the group and a spot in the eighth-finals.

The winners of the eighth finals will qualify for the Platinum Round (1st – 8th place) and the losers go to the Gold Round (9th – 16th).
Silver round (17th – 25th), groups (round robin system) – Group I: Latvia, Azerbaijan, Poland, Georgia, Switzerland; Group J: Ukraine, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Portugal.
The 1st-placed and the 2nd-placed teams in the groups will qualify for the semifinals of the Silver Round. The others will play for places 21st- 25th.

One of the most interesting matches of the day was the encounter between Brazil and Poland. A stake was 2nd place in the group. The Poles scored an opening goal, and Brazil responded with three for 3:1. Poland caught up with the Americans at 3:3 and 4:4. After that, Brazil produced a 3:0 run to jump to 7:4. The Europeans managed to reduce the gap (6:7), but Brazil scored the last goal in the match and qualified for the knockout round, while Poland goes to the Silver Round (places 17th – 25th ).

As expected, Greece advanced to the knockout round from the 1st place, and Japan finished in 2nd place in the group.
The Greeks started slowly, but they broke the rival in the middle two quarters.Japan was too strong for Switzerland.

After a big thriller and a lot of ups and downs, Egypt and Ukraine shared the points. A draw suited to the Africans, because they finished 2nd in the group and will play in the knockout round.
The game was a real rollercoaster. Ukraine earned an early 2:0 lead. But, Egypt responded with seven straight goals and was 7:2 up at halftime. The second half was a completely different story. Ukraine started coming back. The Europeans leveled at 7:7 a minute and seven seconds from the end. In the next attack, Egypt had a chance to secure a win from a penalty shot, but Ukraine’s goalie Khytryi saved the shot. The Europeans couldn’t score a winning goal in the remaining 52 seconds and will play in the Silver Round.

Kazakhstan fought hard, but the Americans didn’t let a surprise. The Asians opened the game with a 2:0 lead. Team USA turned around a 2-goal deficit to a 4:2 lead. The Kazakhs came close (3:4), but the USA responded with four goals, built an 8:3 advantage, and maintained the difference until the end.
