Besides transfers, the most important topics in European water polo is the future of the suspended seasons.
Many countries canceled their leagues and Serbia joined them today. The water polo league won’t be continued. The league is canceled and the ranking won’t be determined.
Viktor Jelenic, the president of the Serbian Water Polo Federation released an open letter regarding the cancelation of the league:
“The Water Polo Association of Serbia has decided to suspend the competitions in the Serbian Men’s and Women’s Championship, based on the recommendation of the majority of members of the Super League, the Competition Commission and the Health Commission of the Federation. The decision has been made especially because of taking care of the health of all the participants and due to the current epidemical situation in the country. The final ranking won’t be determined.”
Ten teams were supposed to compete in the Serbian Super League. They would be split into two groups (the group for the title 1st-6th place and the group for places 7th-10th), according to the mutual results of the Serbian clubs in the Regional League and to the standings in the First „A“ Serbian League. So, Sabac, the 2019 champion, will remain the titleholder for one more year. The national Cup was finished in December and KVK Radnicki won the trophy in this competition.
There is still a possibility for playing junior and youth competitions since the epidemic is under control in Serbia, but everything is still open. The Federation is yet to decide the future of the youth and junior championships.
By the way, the Serbian national team started preparations in Belgrade on Monday. The Olympic champions are still working outside the pool, the fitness preparations are underway.
The Water Polo Federation of Romania discussed the possible resumption of the league yesterday. But, the decision hasn’t be made, because some of the clubs voted for the continuation, while others supported a proposal about the cancelation of the season. The decision is delayed for June.
Early in May, Hungary canceled the league. The composition of next season’s First Hungarian League will be known soon. As we reported, AVUS Szombathely announced that it had withdrawn from the First League, because of the financial situation and that it could compete in the Second League.
AVUS will be replaced by KSI Budapest or Nagykanizsa. KSI was in the first place of Group A of the second league, while Nagykanizsa was atop of Group B before the suspension of the competitions. The Federation accepted the clubs’ proposal – KSI and Nagykanizsa will face off in two matches. The winner of this encounter will be promoted to the First League. The games must be played before June 30.
