After our last article about water polo in Bonaire, we decided to stick in the neighborhood and check out if there is any water polo in Curacao.
The most popular sports, on this Caribbean island, are soccer and baseball, but water polo also has its community. There is only one water polo club Curaçao Orcas, but they have respectable 90 players of which 70 are younger than 18 years. This number hasn’t stopped them to organize their own national championships which they play in the first half of the season. They draft their players in two teams for each category and they play for the title in the best of five games.

The second part of the season is reserved for the national team. Curacao regularly participates in the strongest regional competition CCCAN (Central America & Caribbean swimming confederation) as well as the annual CARIFTA water polo championship where they achieved some of the biggest success. They won the tournament on 4 occasions (2005, 2007, 2008, 2010). In 2010, the biggest success was 7th place in Central America and Caribbean Games.

But that is not all 🙂 They also organize the Curacao International water polo tournament.
This year the tournament will be held from May 12 till May 16.
The head of the organization Miguel Gilberto shared some expectations on this year’s edition
“We were planning to have 8 teams in both men and women categories, but seeing that the COVID-19 is not helping us we would be happy to host 4-6 men teams and 3-4 women teams on our beautiful RIF swimming pool. If you were planning to go to Curacao, this is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the island combined with some water polo excitement. We also managed to arrange a special discount at the local hotel for all the participants.”
The last day for registration is on March the 5th, 2021.
The registration price is $150 per team, in case you do not have a referee there is an additional fee of $50.
