World Masters Championships: 15 teams are still unbeaten

The water polo tournament at the FINA World Masters Championships in Gwangju is getting closer to the first medal matches.

Today, the group stage for men’s age group 50+ was completed. The Olympic Club (USA) won the 1st place, ahead of St Petersburg Masters (Russia). But, the most important challenges begin tomorrow, with the semifinal matches.

After three competition days, 11 clubs have a perfect record in their groups, while 15 teams are still unbeaten.

Politehnica (Romania) dominates the men’ 30+ group, where it has two Korean teams for rivals.

The Olympic Club (USA) leads in the men’s 35+/45+ group, with 2 wins in as many games.

In the male category 45+, Dubrovacki Veterani (Croatia), and title-holder YBL-Octopus (Hungary) collected 9 points each. The Olympic Club has the same record in the 50+ competition.

Santa Barbara Surfers (USA) and SV Canstatt (Germany) achieved three wins each in the 60+ group, while four teams still haven’t suffered a loss or played a draw in the competition for the oldest players (65+/70+): KVP H2Opolo (Slovakia), Perth Cockatoos 65+(Australia), Santa Barbara Masters (USA) and Dusseldorfer (Germany).

Rari Nantes Bologna 30+ (Italy) and San Diego Shores (USA) haven’t been defeated in the women’s competition, they share the 1st place, as their encounter was ended in a draw. The same situation is in the men’s group 55+. Master Old Fellows (Brazil) and Real Canoe (Spain) are tied for the first place with 4 points each.

Today, Oazis Sport Club (Hungary 35+/40+) has posted the biggest win of the tournament so far. The Hungarians beat OLPAK (South Korea) 44:1. The Koreans their only goal scored 9 seconds from the end of the match.
