AZC seemed to be the unapproachable leader in the Dutch league for a long time, but on Saturday ZV De Zaan showed that there are more title candidates. The runner-up won the mutual top match with 10-16.Â
ZV De Zaan made the difference in a strong second period. Center Thomas Lucas excelled in that phase with three goals and gave his side a 4-8 lead. AZC was unable to close that gap. With this victory, ZV De Zaan has come within three points to AZC.
At the bottom, SVH and Waterpolo Den Haag shared the points: 10-10. In Rotterdam, The Hague thought it was heading for the second win of the season at the end of the third period, but SVH came back nicely in the last period. After Koen Heiden’s 8-10, Laszlo Balasz Nagy and Tomas Kostelnik secured the point.
GZC Donk and Het Ravijn also played a draw. In Gouda it became 12-12. The visitors could live with the point. From the second period, GZC Donk controlled the game more. After Guus van Yperen’s 6-6, it was always the home team that took the lead. But just as often Het Ravijn fought back. Jorrit Aanstoot was the last to bring the teams into balance two minutes before the end.
On Sunday GZC Donk played again. Against Polar Bears (which on Saturday had won 10-16 against De Ham with debuting Joran Heerink), GZC Donk lost by the smallest difference: 11-10. For a long time there seemed nothing to worry about for Polar Bears; halfway through they were on a comfortable 9-4 lead. However, in the second half, GZC Donk recovered in such a way that it became very exciting in the last period. With three minutes to play, Mart van der Weijden scored the 11-10 and it could have gone either way. But Polar Bears keeper Eelco Wagenaar managed to keep his goal clean in those final minutes.
UZSC booked a narrow victory over ZPB: 11-12. ZPB briefly headed for a big stunt when Onno Kuller and Ton van der Velden reduced ZPB to 10-10. Flemming Kastrop and Joost van der Burg prevented further damage. Petar Filipovic’s last goal came too late for a new resurrection from Barendrecht.
ZPC Amersfoort also played anything but convincing. At home they recorded a 10-6 victory over PSV.Â
ZVL-1886 won convincingly against BZC: 15-7. The team form Borculo didn’t have much to contribute in Leiden. Especially in the last period it was one-way traffic.Â
Women
Leader ZV De Zaan beat GZC Donk. In Gouda it was 7-10. After Isabella van Toorn’s 4-5, De Zaan struck the decisive gap. The visitors, led by Lieke Rogge, ran out to 6-10.
Number 2 UZSC lost against close attacker Polar Bears: 7-8. Due to the Utrecht defeat, the teams now have an equal number of loss points. UZSC however has played one more match. The difference in quality between the two teams was small. Storm Willemsen and Lola Moolhuijzen brought the visitors from Ede to 3-5 in the second period, but three Utrecht goals in a row quickly nullified that lead. Then Polar Bears found the net three times in a row. With one and a half minutes left on the clock, Kila van der Veen made it 7-8 and an exciting finish followed. However, no more goals were scored.
ZVL-1886 had great difficulty with PSV. Only in the last period Iefke van Belkum’s team did secure the victory: 11-9. The game seemed to have been over for a while. In the third period, Noha Zwiers and Renée de Kleer let ZVL run to 9-6, but Annelot van Rooijen and Viën van der Beek did not give in and brought PSV back to 9-8. The two goals by De Kleer (her fourth and fifth of the game) in the fourth period, however, brought the decision.Â
