Japanese water polo has developed in the last few years. Yoji Omoto, the head coach of the Japanese National Team, achieved international success with the Men’s Team, entering the top international competitions.
In 2018, the Japanese finished 4th in the World League and 7th at the World Cup. Japan was a very strong opponent to favourites this year too. They won the 6th place in the World League and the 11th at the World Championships.
The following few years should be the peak of this generation, as Japan will be the host of the 2020 Olympic Games (Tokyo) and the 2021 World Championships (Fukuoka).
