The first round in the Dutch League was a false start. UZSC and Polar Bears had a number of COVID-19 infections in the selection, which resulted in postponing their matches against respectively SVH and ZVL. The other teams did come into action. The most tension was in Krommenie, where title candidate AZC only narrowly beat De Ham. Only in the very last second was the decisive hit. The matchwinner was the new Hungarian goalkeeper David Gyorgy who came forward in the last attack and hit the ball against the ropes.
It was also exciting in Barendrecht. ZPB and BZC differed little from each other. In the end, the guests won with 9:11. There was much less tension in Eindhoven, where GZC Donk beat home team PSV (14:22). Spaniard Erik Brugué was in good shape with six goals. In Zaandam, De Zaan beat ZPC Amersfoort remarkably easily: 17:10. The other promoted team, Waterpolo The Hague, was overwhelmed by Het Ravijn in the first two periods, but then gave a good match against the team from Nijverdal. However, the team of coach Mark van Engelen did not come closer than 8:12.

2020/21 Dutch League Women – Day 1
For the women, the favorites made no mistake. National champion GZC Donk outclassed Het Ravijn 7:22. Marit van der Weijden was on fire with six goals but did not become the top scorer of the weekend. That honor fell to Nerida Drewes of UZSC. She scored no less than ten times against ZPB. De Zaan also won convincingly. The team of coach Arjan Vos won the derby against De Zaan 6:21. Polar Bears and ZVL were more evenly matched. The home team from Ede won with 11:8. The most tension was in Eindhoven where PSV met SWOL 1894. Both teams will not play a major role in the battle for the title, so winning points will be scarce this season. PSV eventually left the pool as the winner with a minimal 15-14 victory. Notable were the six goals of SWOL-player Mieke van der Sloot. Last season she was the coach of the team from Zwolle.
