Djordje Vucinic, who has represented Serbia in several major competitions over the last few years, including the 2023 and 2024 World Championships, has joined Steaua Bucharest after leaving Novi Beograd.
He played for Partizan, Radnicki, and Sabac before moving to Novi Beograd in 2021. This summer, Novi Beograd unexpectedly terminated his contract, coinciding with the departure of Angelos Vlachopoulos from the club for the same reason.
Vucinic, 26, who won silver at the 2019 World U20 Championships, will be welcomed by his namesake, Djordje Filipovic, the new head coach of Steaua. Filipovic served as an assistant coach at Novi Beograd from 2021 to 2025. Interestingly, Steaua's first matches of the upcoming season will take place in Belgrade, at the Champions League qualification tournament, hosted by Novi Beograd.
Jaukovic arrives from Partizan, and Piriianu from Italy
Vucinic is not the only Serbian player joining Steaua during this summer window. Andrija Jaukovic, a 20-year-old captain of the Serbian junior national team that finished in fifth place at the World U20 Championships in Zagreb this year, came from Partizan. Jaukovic won a silver medal at the 2023 World U20 Championships.
Additionally, Steaua signed Alin Piriianu, a 22-year-old player who has been on the extended roster for the Romanian national team. Last season, he played for Aquatico Torino in the Italian Serie B and is a former member of Dinamo Bucharest.
