German champion Spandau 04 announced that it had released its head coach, Greek Athanasios Kechagias.
"We made this decision, regardless of the upcoming sporting tasks, in the interest of the future of our men's water polo team and the national and international reputation our club has acquired over decades ." President Hagen Stamm and manager Peter Rohle said in a joint statement in this evening's press release.
The club didn't have an additional explanation for this decision.
Kechagias arrived at Spandau 04 in 2022. Before that, he coached the national team of Romania. Last season, Spandau won the German Championships.
Since the beginning of the season, the Berlin-based team has won the German Super Cup and recorded five wins in as many matches in the national league. After four rounds of the Champions League, the Berliners have six points and a chance to qualify for the quarterfinal stage. If they don't keep 2nd place in Group A, they will continue the season in the Euro Cup.
