After a one-month break, the Hungarian Cup for men restarted today. The competition was interrupted because of the coronavirus cases.
Today, the matches for the places 5th – 9th were played.
Honved defeated BVSC 10:6 in the fifth-place match. Eger finished in 7th place, as it beat Miskolc 14:8. Szentes was better than Szeged (14:10) in the game for the 9th position.
The match for 5th place was more important than usually. Honved might play in the semifinals, depending on the development of the coronavirus situation.
The semifinals are scheduled for September 26 (OSC – Szolnok, Ferencvaros – Vasas). But, the players of OSC and Szolnok have been quarantined for a while, due to the coronavirus cases. So, it is questionable whether they will be ready for the semifinals.
Ferencvaros and Vasas don’t have problems with infected players at the moment.
The Hungarian Water Polo Federation (MVSLZ) prepared a scenario in a case of the withdrawal. If one of the four semifinalists withdraws from the Final Four, the 5th-placed team (Honved) will replace it in the semifinals. The Federation confirmed that possibility today.
According to the latest information, collected by the website Vlv.hu, Szolnok is not considering a withdrawal. Almost all of the players and the staff members healed. If everything goes out as the club expects, Szolnok will start the league season next weekend. On the other side, OSC reported ten corona cases early in September. The whole team has been quarantined since then. In the following days, we will get an answer regarding OSC’s participation in the Cup.

BVSC scored an opening goal in the Budapest derby Honved – BVSC. But, the hosts responded with four goals and jumped to a 4:1 lead. Early in the second period, BVSC reduced the gap to one (3:4). However, Honved, led by Norbert Hosnyanszky (3 goals), controlled everything in the remaining time. The home side built a 6-goal lead (10:4) by the last break. Honved let BVSC score two consolation goals in the last two minutes.
Miskolc started well in the match for the 7th place and led 3:1 against Eger. But, Eger took the lead in the second quarter. Before the final period, Miskolc trailed 7:8, but it ran out of gas for the last quarter.
