The end of summer is coming near. The water polo season in Hungary has already started, the national leagues in other countries will begin in September and October. The transfer window will be finished soon, and major water polo transfers 2020 are almost complete.
In August, there were a lot of transfers in Greece, Croatia, and Serbia.
Greece
The Greek clubs have been busy in the transfer market in August.
The league will be more competitive than in the previous seasons. Olympiacos rejuvenated the team, while Vouliagmeni, Apollon, AEK, and many other clubs will enter the new season with stronger squads.
Seven players left Olympiacos, and as many arrived at the club. The Piraeus-based club’s latest additions are three players who were on loan in the past few seasons. An experienced goalkeeper Stefanos Galanopoulos and Emmanouil Prekas returned from Ydriakos (both were part of Olympiacos’s team, which won the 2018 Champions League). An 18-year-old goalkeeper Giannis Syrmas came back from Glyfada. Olympiacos will have only one foreigner in the team in the next season – Max Irving (USA), who came from Ydriakos.
Vouliagmeni did an excellent job by bringing Luka Lozina (came from Jug) and Emmanouil Mylonakis (Olympiacos).
Stefan Mitrovic, Alexandros Gounas, Alex Bowen are the biggest of several Apollon’s additions. Mitrovic and Gounas left Olympiacos, while Bowen came from Mladost Zagreb.
Even nine Americans will play in Greece next summer. We already mentioned Irving (Olympiacos) and Bowen (Apollon). Dylan Woodhead and Ben Stevenson will be competing for Glyfada. Johnny Hooper and Chancellor Ramirez joined Palaio Faliro. Matt Farmer signed for Peristeri. Team USA’s goalkeeper Drew Holland and Bennet Williams will be teammates in Chios. According to the latest news, the club Chios will be financially supported by the Municipality of Chios. Before this, the club leaders were considering withdrawal from the first league. Still, as it seems now, they will realize their plans.
Drew Holland played for Chios in the last season, until the suspension of the competition due to the pandemic. But he didn’t come back to Greece to finish the league which was resumed in July. However, he will extend the contract. Williams is a newcomer.
Chios yet hasn’t confirmed that it signed the contracts with the Americans, but the USA Wate Polo Federation announced that Holland and Williams would come to Chios.

Croatia
This summer, the last big transfer in European water polo has been Andro Buslje’s arrival at Mladost. The captain of the Croatian national team left Pro Recco in May. He didn’t rush with a decision about the next club. He has several offers. In the end, he decided to return to the homeland. But, he didn’t come back to his hometown Dubrovnik. Buslje signed a 1-year contract with Mladost.
A few months ago, Mladost was in a big crisis, the future of the team was questionable because many of the players were close to the exit doors. However, Mladost managed to keep almost all of the players who were on the roster in the last season. Before Buslje, two players arrived in Zagreb – Ante Viskovic (Jadran Split) and Mislav Vrlic (Primorje). Mladost will continue to battle for trophies.
As usual, there weren’t many changes on the roster of Jug Dubrovnik. A few players left, while Team USA’s center-forward Alex Obert signed a contract with the Croatian champion.
A lot of players left Jadran Split, while three have arrived so far. The biggest addition is a returnee Jerko Marinic Kragic.

Serbia
Three clubs were often in the headlines of the news about water polo transfers in Serbia this summer. Many Serbian players returned to the country. The most popular destinations for them were KVK Radnicki (the Serbian Cup winner), reigning champion Sabac, and Novi Beograd 011.
Radnicki concluded the transfer market activities by signing a 1-year-contract with Strahinja Rasovic, the best scorer of the 2019/20 Hungarian League. Besides Rasovic, two players arrived in Kragujevac during August – Montenegro’s Aleksa Ukropina and a young Russian Nikita Krug.
Crvena Zvezda formed a good team and might enter the battle for trophies. Still, Radnicki, Sabac and Novi Beograd will be favorites for the title.
Partizan has new management from yesterday. It will have a difficult task to get the club out of the crisis.
It seems that Vojvodina will be stronger than in the previous season.
