In the last few years, most of the duels between Spandau and Hannover have been equal battles. The same story repeated in the 2022 Super Cup. The first quarter belonged to the visitors. Hannover was a better rival in the second period, so the teams were tied at 5:5 at halftime. Hannover scored an opening goal in the second half and took a 6:5 lead. Still, Spandau responded with a 3:0 run and built an 8:6 advantage. In the last minute of the third quarter, Lozina scored the seventh goal for Hannover. But, Spandau dictated the pace in the final eight minutes. The Berliners scored added two goals by the middle of the fourth quarter (Gbadamassi and Restovic), earned a 10:7 lead and maintained the difference until the end.
It was a huge battle, and the number of personal fouls proves that. Hannover committed 11, and Spandau 19 personal fouls. The Berliners lost three players due to three exclusions at the finish of the match, but they didn’t let Waspo come back.
As mentioned, Spandau won 17 Super Cups, Hannover remains with six trophies in this competition. These are the only two teams that managed to lift the German Super Cup, which was launched in 1979, but it wasn’t played every season.
The 2022 Super Cup is the first trophy on Spandau’s bench for the new coach Athanasios Kechagias. The Greek has guided the Berliners since this summer.
