Itβs hard to imagine the Italian national team without Alessandro Campagna.
He has guided the βSettebelloβ for more than 15 years. The crown of his successful playing career was the Olympic gold in Barcelona in 1992.Β
Coaching Italy, Campagna won silver at the 2012 Olympic Games and bronze in Rio four years after, two gold medals at the World Championships (2011 and 2019), etc. In 2022, Italy was one of the best teams in the world. The Italians finished 2nd at the World Championships, losing to Spain in the final after a penalty shootout. A few weeks after that, they won their first-ever World League gold. At the end of the summer, Italy reached the semifinals of the European Championships and took 4th place.
Alessandro Campagna’s Top 5 of 2022
βWe had many competitions this year. Some players were excellent at World Championships, some at the Europeans, and some in the World League. The criterion for my choices was continuity. I picked the players who played well in all competitions. Therefore, the comment for each of the five players is the same – theyΒ had a continuity of performances throughout the season.β

1. Francesco di Fulvio (ITA)
Italian National Team Player. Club: Pro Recco. Position: Driver
After a successful season with Pro Recco, he won silver at the World Championships and 4th place at the European Championships.
2. Felipe Perrone (ESP)
Spanish National Team Player. Club: Barceloneta. Position: Driver
He greatly contributed to Spainβs successful results at the World and the European Championships.
3. Josip Vrlic (CRO)
Croatian National Team Player. Club: Radnicki. Position: Center forward
There are small differences between the top five players, especially between the first three places. They all displayed very high performances in all competitions. Josip Vrlic or Felipe Perrone could be in 1st place, as well as Di Fulvio.
4. Gergo Zalanki (HUN)
Hungarian National Team Player. Club: Pro Recco. Position: Wing
Gergo Zalanki played well in the Champions League and the summer competitions with Hungary, winning silver at the European Championships.
