Total Player 2022 by Ioannis Fountoulis

December 10, 2022

Ioannis Fountoulis, the captain of Greece, has been one of the power engines of the national team that has achieved great results in the last few years.

Fountoulis, the best scorer of the 2017 World Championships and the 2018 European Championships, led Greece as a captain to the silver Olympic medal in Tokyo last year, and to the bronze at the Worlds in Budapest this year. These two are the most significant Ioannis Fountoulis successes in the national team, while he won the 2018 Champions League and two silver medals (2015 and 2019) playing for Olympiacos, and silver in the CHL with Ferencvaros (2021).

This season, Olympiacos is again one of the contenders for the Champions League medals.

Ioannis Fountoulis’ Top 5 of 2022

Munarriz540x540

1. Alberto Munarriz (ESP)

Spain National Team Player. Club: Barceloneta. Position: Wing

The national team of Spain was the most successful this summer. The team is composed of amazing players. The Spaniards won the gold medal in Budapest and the bronze in Split. They are displaying the most beautiful water polo in my opinion. Although Perrone is the one that connects all the pieces in their game, and Granados is a scoring machine, my first pick will be Alberto Munarriz. He is a two-way player, who faced a serious injury at the start of the season. Still, he came back stronger. He was crucial for the team and played excellently in all competitions.
Zalanki540x540

2. Gergo Zalanki (HUN)

Hungarian National Player.Club: Pro Recco . Position: Wing

Zalanki had an amazing year with Pro Recco, winning all titles. He was a key player for Recco. Zalanki scored many and very crucial goals. He also won silver with Hungary in Split.
Di Fulvio540x540

3. Francesco di Fulvio (ITA)

Italian National Player.Club: Pro Recco . Position: Left Driver

He is one of the best players in the world, and he proved his quality once again last season. He won everything with Recco, won silver in the World Championship, and reached the semifinals in Split. The level of his play was amazing in all competitions.
Bijac540x540

4. Marko Bijac (CRO)

Croatian National Player. Club: Olympiacos. Position: Goalkeeper.

Marko is a fantastic goalkeeper and a person with great character. He played his best tournament in the European Championship and helped Croatia in winning the gold, which was a very big success.
Vlachopoulos540x540

5. Angelos Vlachopoulos (GRE)

Greek National Player. Club: Novi Beograd. Position: Driver

A two-way player that can make any team better. He had a very successful season last year and some amazing and crucial performances, like the Champions League semifinals against Brescia. He also won the bronze medal in the World Championship, playing at an extremely high level.
