Vasas knocks down Debrecen in final quarter; dramatic endings in Szeged and Miskolc

Four Hungarian clubs have started their LEN Euro Cup campaigns this weekend, but there is no break in the best national water polo league in the world.

Five games of the Hungarian Championship 14th round were held today.

2020/21 Hungarian League, Day 14

Vasas convincingly beat Debrecen, but the visitors kept up with the hosts for three quarters. A second before the end of the third quarter, Debrecen trailed 5:6. However, Sava Randjelovic doubled Vasas’ advantage in the last second of this quarter (7:5). The hosts dominated the final quarter.

Honved recorded a win over KSI. At halftime, Honved led 7:5. KSI fought hard in the second half, but when Norbert Hosnyanszky converted a penalty to give Honved a 13:8 advantage with five minutes remaining, it was clear that KSI couldn’t surprise its rival.

UVSE defeated Kaposvar 12:11. Midway through the final period, the score was 10:10. UVSE netted two action goals within 70 seconds for 12:10. Kaposvar scored just a consolation goal 39 seconds from the end.

Szeged and PVSK shared the points in the match played in Szeged. PVSK had a 2-goal advantage (7:5) before the fourth quarter. But, Szeged played excellently in the final period and turned around the 2-goal deficit to an 8:7 lead (31st minute). Nine seconds before the end, Tamas Csorba secured the point for PVSK.

The encounter between Miskolc and Szentes was also ended with no winner. Miskolc got off to a great start and rushed to a 5:1 lead, and maintained a four-goal advantage for a while (6:2, 7:3) But, Szentes started coming back step-by-step and earned a 2-goal advantage (11:9) in the middle of the fourth quarter. But, Miskolc scored two goals in the remaining time and saved the point.
