Even though the water polo club season ended with the finals in Genoa, the clubs are already looking ahead for the new season. Jug is no exception — they signed a contract first thing after coming back from Italy. The star is Alexandros Papanastasiou, a 19-year-old Greek.
Alexandros is a former player of Glyfada and a member of the national Greek senior team, who was selected as one among the best last year in Belgrade, at the World Junior Championship. Speaking of, Papanastasiou was was the carrier of the match for the young Greek team when they won the Championship in the dramatic final against Croatia.
He’s right-handed, plays the left attacking side, is an excellent swimmer and is very good in defensive tasks.
Before the signing, Papanastasiou commented:
“I’m so honored to have come to this club with rich water polo history. It is a privilege to be on a team with so many world-class players. I believe that my career in Jug will help me to develop my playing. Also, I hope that my playing will contribute to the club, so we can achieve the goals we have for the next season.”
The contract is valid until 2022 and it was signed by the president of Jug, Tomislav Dumančić, who said:
“After many follow-ups, we had on Alexandros, our professional decision was to get him to build the club’s future with our younger players. We are developing a new Jug, which will be competitive in the following seasons, in all competitions.”
Besides Dumančić, Vjekoslav Kobešćak also commented:
“Alexandros had several offers, and we’re glad he chose us. He’s a talented young player who chose the environment in which he will thrive to his full potential. He will help the club win trophies in the coming years.”
