The Italian Swimming Federation officially confirmed the competition format for the 2020/21 Italian Water Polo Championships.
As it was agreed a few days ago, 13 teams are split into four groups, and the league consists of two phases of the regular season with playoffs.
The composition of the groups and the calendar of the first stage were determined today.
Groups of the first phase
Group A: Pro Recco, Quinto Genova, Salerno.
Group B: Brescia, Roma Nuoto, Trieste.
Group C: Ortigia, Telimar Palermo, Lazio.
Group D: Savona, Posillipo, Florentia, Metanopoli.
The first phase will take place with home and away matches on the following dates: November 7, November 21, November 28, December 12, January 16, and January 30.
Schedule of Day 1 (November 7)
Group A: Quinto – Pro Recco, Salerno bye.
Group B: Roma – Trieste, Brescia bye.
Group C: Ortigia – Lazio, Telimar bye.
Group D: Savona – Metanopoli, Posillipo – Florentia.
Groups of the second stage
Group E: A1, D1, B2, C2.
Group F: B1, C1, A2, D2.
Relegation playoffs group: A3, B3, C3, D3, D4.
After six rounds in groups E and F (double round-robin competition), the top two teams from each of the two groups will advance to the semifinals of the playoffs (E1 vs. F2, and F1 vs. E2).
After 10 rounds of the Relegation playoffs group, the last-placed team will be relegated to A2 League.
The Federation will announce the format of the playoffs and the dates of the second phase shortly. The new Health protocol will be published soon.
