Sabrina Van der Sloot: “Every team has its weak spot”

July 7, 2019

Gold medalist and MVP from the Barcelona 2018 European Championships, Silver medalist from Kaan 2015 World Championships, runner up in the Total Player 2018 award… What more to say than to thank Sabrina for finding some time and sharing her thoughts and expectations on the World Championship in Gwangju.

Can you give us a short brief on the team in your Group A?

Of course, Team USA will be the toughest team to beat. They are very strong in every aspect of the game. South Africans will be the perfect opening game for us. They always want to play and have fun playing water polo which is good to see in an opponent. Honestly, I don’t know much about New Zealand right now, if they have the same level of playing as recent years they will be physically strong and motivated to play the best they can.

Recently you finished 4th at World League SuperFinal in Budapest. Which part of the game do you need to improve to be ready for World Championship?

We need to play more as a team. Since we have a lot of individually strong players we are always giving a good fight to every opponent. But playing together every moment, in attack and defense, we can beat every other team.

What is the Netherlands goal on this World Championships?

We are always aiming for the gold medal but we had some chances in the squad recently and I personally think that we should just focus on playing the games and then we will see how much we can achieve in this tournament.

In your opinion, how to compete against the USA?

Well, I think every team has its weak spots. We just need to utilize them much better then we did in Budapest.

Which team could be a big positive surprise in South Korea?

Italy is doing a great job right now and after last years deception at the Europeans I think they want to prove that they are a team which belongs to the top teams in the world. Also Russia could be a surprise. They are utilizing the new rules very well.
